Katie Litton

artist

The pace of life on Arran makes you internalise, I look out to the sea every morning and feel comfort walking in the forests. Absorbing the changing colours of the seasons, transporting me somewhere else, away from urban life. I am adjusting to my new surroundings, seeing the beauty in the detail. Focusing on the mystery of the places you would normally pass by.

A graduate in fine art from the Glasgow School of Art, Katie Litton has enjoyed a wide ranging career encompassing interior design, set design and prop making form television. In the last few years a move from her family from London to the stunning surroundings and more relaxed life style of the Isle of Arran has rekindled her passion for painting, inspired by the simple beauty of the flora and fauna of the island.

"I love exploring different cities, especially discovering vintage furniture and objects of interest. I discovered a cute tamburello in a vintage fair in Bologna and had an idea to paint it. These rare pieces look great just hanging from a simple coat peg."

When painting in oils, Katie uses inspirations that featured in her interior design.

"The rhythms of nature’s soft curves and patterns attract me. I find myself constantly pausing to really look closely, absorbing its beauty and the unknown darkness beyond it. In particular, I've been drawn to the symbolism of capturing the energy of the plant stored in its berries for the darker, winter months, which has featured in my work for a long time."

Inspired by the love of Flemish masters using candlelight, Katie considers the contrast of the deep dark against the light and warmth it gives to the form.
